Owlet Dream App Redesign Part 1: Interviews & Low-Fidelity Mockups

The Owlet Dream App is the mobile counterpart to the Owlet Cam: Smart HD Video Baby Monitor. The application is intended to help parents monitor their sleeping baby via their mobile device, however there are several flaws that hinder the user experience. Interviews were conducted with a sample of 7 parents who all currently use the app. The participants ranged in age from 26 - 34 years old. All participants described themselves as at least moderately tech savy and reported using their mobile device for a minimum of 2 hours per day. Each participant also reported that they primarily use the Owlet Dream App on an iOS device.

There were 3 common challenges reported by the sample of parents:

Microphone: The microphone feature was hidden and difficult to use. There were no clear instructions on how to use the microphone within the app and at least half of the parents reported that the two-way audio was one of the main reasons why they purchased the Owlet Camera in the first place. Difficulty using the feature within the app led to some self-reported disappointment with the purchase overall.

Live Video Feed: Parents reported that the live video feed on the home page was too small and settings that they felt were not as important as the feed were taking up half of the screen real estate.

Info Icons: Almost all participants expressed that there were too many info icons on the main screen. Almost every label had an info icon next to it. The overuse of info icons was visually unappealing and gave the impression that the app was difficult to use.

Based on the feedback, the goal of the new design was to:

Improve the visibility of the microphone feature and make it easier to use.

Make the live video feed larger and remove rarely used settings from the home screen.

Remove the info icons from the home screen and provide clear instructions in the settings screen instead.

Owlet Dream App Redesign Part 2: High-Fidelity Mockups

The new design for the Owlet Dream App utilizes Owlet's current design system standards to maintain brand recognition. However the home screen was simplified to place an emphasis on the live video feed and a secondary focus on the microphone feature. Info icons were removed from the home screen as well as rarely used settings. One notable limitation for this project was the small sample size. The current design should be tested with more users and additional feedback should be considered.
