UX/UI Designer | Web Developer | Psychologist
State University of New York at Geneseo
I've always wanted to understand how humans think. So, in college I studied psychology (BA) with a minor in human development. I became fascinated with cognitive psychology.
University at Buffalo
After college, I wanted to understand how people learn. I went on to get my masters degree in School Psychology. Aside from assessing IQ and academic achievement, I had opportunities to collect/interpret data, collaborate with teams, and develop student-focused solutions during my career as a school psychologist.
Charlotte, NC
After graduate school, I married my wonderful husband who owns a photo booth rental company. It was a new venture for us, so I had the chance to try out lots of different roles within the company. Ultimately, I found my niche researching current photo booth technology, keeping up with market trends, maintaining our website, and working with individual customers to design their custom photo booth experience. I fell in love with the opportunities to be creative and innovative.
UNC Charlotte
So I decided I wanted to be creative, but how?! I spent some time researching potential interests and stumbled upon coding. It seemed interesting, but I had minimal coding experience. I took a leap of faith and enrolled in a Coding Boot Camp at UNC Charlotte. It was such a rewarding experience and I now feel proficient with both front-end and back-end web development.
Interaction Design Foundation
In my free time, I began reading Norman's The Design of Everyday Things. Up until this point, I was trying to find a way to consolidate all of my skills/interests into a career. Once I realized that interaction design is the intersection of psychology and technology, it all clicked for me! I began studying UX/UI design independently and I completely fell in love with it.
The Owlet Dream App is the mobile counterpart to the Owlet Cam: Smart HD Video Baby Monitor. The application is intended to help parents monitor their sleeping baby via their mobile device, however there are several flaws that hinder the user experience. Interviews were conducted with a sample of 7 parents who all currently use the app. The participants ranged in age from 26 - 34 years old. All participants described themselves as at least moderately tech savy and reported using their mobile device for a minimum of 2 hours per day. Each participant also reported that they primarily use the Owlet Dream App on an iOS device.
There were 3 common challenges reported by the sample of parents:
Based on the feedback, the goal of the new design was to:
Low-fidelity mockups were created using Whimsical
The new design for the Owlet Dream App utilizes Owlet's current design system standards to maintain brand recognition. However the home screen was simplified to place an emphasis on the live video feed and a secondary focus on the microphone feature. Info icons were removed from the home screen as well as rarely used settings. One notable limitation for this project was the small sample size. The current design should be tested with more users and additional feedback should be considered.
High-fidelity mockups were created using Figma
Reworking a logo to achieve a more modern and sophisticated look using Adobe Photoshop. Also revamping the colorway to match the new logo.
